I am wondering what is the best way to secure the stearing rack in my MK
I am nearing completion and I have for some reason left this late. Is it best to lockwire the nut to part of the chassis, of will i get away in the
SVA with Nyloc nuts?
What does anyone else think?
I think Nylocs are the norm.
Are your brackets OK? Man enough to stop rack movement?
I have used the rack supplied with the kit and the mounting plate is as shown above. i have used the strongest bolts i could buy at the local fixing specialist.
Hi Snoopy,
Im no chassis expert, thats why i bought one. I cant really compare. Your pic looks Ok to me. Do you think mine looks OK? (you are more of an expert
than me). All i know is that a mate of a mate of mine had problems due to rack movement and i was told had to strengthen the plate. It may just be a
one off problem and was easily fixed. I dont know what rack was used or how it was mounted - maybe it wasnt a std set up. I only posted the reply as
it may give some people that are concerned about vague steering an idea where to look (i dont mean just Mk owners - i mean se7en builders in
general)
Only experience i have had in this area is with a Mk1 Golf GTi that i rebuilt / uprated a while ago. I tried to get away with the original rack mounts
but steering was a bit vague. I had to fit stronger bushes to control the movement. The se7ens should be much better as they are all solid mounted to
the chassis. As long as the brackets / plates are rigid, as you say all should be OK. The problem i have been made aware of may have been a one off
incident. Maybe this is a good point for locosters to be aware of when they make their own chassis, ie ensure the brackets are strong and rigid. Iam
sure you will agree with me that this is one area that needs to be right.
Thanks for the pics and clarification.
Darren.
