I'm sure I remember people saying they had to limit the travel of their steering racks (MK Indy modified rack in particular)

Can anyone tell me why they do it and the simplest way of going about it?

I had to do mine for the MOT (no SVA) just in case they got picky. Made a pair of ally collars, 'bout 8mm thick, slotted to pass the rack output in situ, held with lockwire. You can use correct size jubilee clips on their own. It all hides under the gaiters.

With steering rack on full lock, the track rods/extensions fouled on the wing stays and also inside edges of wheel. I don't know why- our first build had no such problems. We simply machined a couple of aluminium spacers to fit over the rack and into the rack casting. They work an absolute treat.

You could also use jubilee clips or PU bushes to restrict the movement, as others have done.

Not as yet but I can get some tomorrow - if we have time. They will be "in-situ" will it matter. I can always ask the machinist what dimensions he used

make them out of steel then you can tack weld them on. Jubilee clips you need to be careful of, certain sized ones could jam the screw / wormwheel bit under the outer casing of the rack (Escort rack is like this, not sure about Sierra), the last thing you want when on full opposite lock is to find that you cant then unwind the lock again!

Sorry to drag this up, but does anyone have a photo, or dimensions of these collars? (I need to get a set made up)

Mike, they're easy enough to measure with the boots off the rack. Just turn your wheels to the point you want them to stop and measure the distance between the rack casting and the knuckle on the steering arms. Repeat measurement on other side as a check. Measure the diameter of the rack itself and the internal diameter of the casting.

This will give you the dimensions you require. Make the hole ever so slightly larger than the rack, (so it slips over it) and slightly less than the diameter of the casting at the end (So it sits inside). Then just unscrew the steering arms and slip the rings over.

Does that make sense?

Cheers for the link J_Davis. I rang Quantum, but they said they are only suitable for alloy racks.

I'm sure my donor had a manual alloy rack, which I took to MK to be shortened. However when it came back it was powdercoated and kind of looked steel.

Does anyone know if MK skip the alloy racks and replace them with shortened steel ones?
