Vented or solid ?
Paul (Notts) - 13/7/05 at 06:34 PM

Time to sort out the front brakes on my Viento.

Just got a price from MAC#1 for willwood four pot callipers but they only stock solid disc types.

will these be OK for the weight of a V8 viento est 500 - 550 Kg

Vented types cost more but are they worth it ?

500-550 with V8?

optimistic??

its only 100Kgs more of an Velocity??with bike engine?

think you need to calculate with 700Kgs
Fuel Full, 2 persons.. etc. etc.

Tks

I agree I was at RAW today and the supercharged V8 Striker they built recently for a customer came in at 700kg all up.

I view the weight of the car as i view my own weight

a lot less than it realy is

There again. We are not realy talking about weight but MASS

Weight and mass are two different things.

One is a scaler quantity mesured in Kg
the other is a vector quantity measured in newtons

Either way, you need to be able to stop it...

I believe they are to fit the Sierra Hubs too.. Regarding the weight of 500~550... our's has a bike engine and is 506Kgs fully loaded. I would consider hitting within 100Kgs this weight with a V8 a pipe dream.

Stu, what do you use on your car (the locost), out of interest. Still not decided on vented or solid for mine yet and performance/weights should be similar.

cheers

Personally I'm sticking to solid 240mm discs and light 4 pot calipers. I was speaking to Bruce at Raceleda and that the route he advises on 500kg cars.

The theory is get the disc up to working temperature quickly so less mass in the disc helps this.

vented or not vented, for the same area of brake pad against metal you get the same braking effort. Solid discs may fade more if they overheat. The vent in ventilated discs cools the discs, reducing fade.

Vented discs weigh more because they are thicker. this makes your car slower to accelerate and decelerate (slightly).

A seven, being an opened wheeled car, will have good brake cooling as it is and so vented discs are less neccesary.

Discs only heat up by being used a lot. That is by slowing a lot of mass from high speed to low speeds very often. Sevens don't have a lot of mass and so need vented discs less. If you are planing on serious racing then vented discs may be for you. For a road car then lower weight of solid dics may be more benificial than the vent in ventilated discs.

pff

i would go vented....

on 700Kgs the 3Kgs difference on your disk don't gonna make allot of difference?
do you think?

Tks

its unspring weight, so 3kgs might even be noticable.

i was gonna forward the argument for solid discs, but wouldnt have worded it so well! But i would use solid if i could be arsed changing them
