escort steering rack ratio

Hi

Does anyone no the standard ratio for a mk2 escort rack ?

I've been looking for a quick rack and most seem to be 2.4 and cost about £110, but i've just spotted this on raldes

http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=900_1332_1331&products_id=10557

Is 2.9 much quicker than standard?

As it happens, I have a Haynes Escort manual by my right elbow!

It says that the standard rack is 3.5 turns from end to end.

Thanks Dave

Will 2.9 be quick enough? its half the price of a 2.4

Depends on what you intend to do with the car. For road/some track use, the standard (3.5) turn rack is more than adequate. I had a standard ratio rack in my Westfield, and I can't say that a higher ratio rack would of been a 'must have'.
However, I fitted a 2.2 to the Locost. For lairy tail slides, it's a must...

I was just thinking the same;

I have a 3.5 turns Escort rack and the car is twitchy enough Thanks

I guess it's due to the light weight of these cars but the steering is very light (even with a 260mm steering wheel) and requires very little inattention to start wandering all over the road

the standard rack is hard work on the steering wheel with a heavy right foot fitted a 2.2 and life is fun at the roundabouts

thanks for replies

I have a standard rack fitted and it seems ok, but i'm fitting a quaife lsd and i'm worried i might not catch it if i over do it

For the price of the 2.9 i might try it as my standard rack is secondhand

I got a new one from Rally design, and its very good using it on locost race car. Most equipmet from them is top goods and cheaper than most

Wow!! I was just gonna ask this exact question, having seen the super cheap 2.9s on Rally Design.

Rotating my standard jobby, it seems more like 3.7 than 3.5. Anyway I'm slightly concerned a proper 2.4 may be a little too much, especially with my relatively heavy and driven front end and my 260mm caterham wheel. This 2.9 in-a-slight-hurry-rack might be just the job!! Anyone got one yet and have anything to report?? Will I still be catching slides and getting round hairpins without crossing hands?

Cheers,

Liam

with 4x4 Liam, I'd definitely go for the 2.9 rack.

Your car will be more stable and less lairy than most anyway with the 4x4, and with a 2.9 rack you'll be more "in charge" when the drive to the front wheels starts to pull on your arms a bit.

My XR4x4 has the std ford 2.8 turn rack and I get pretty out of shape in that fairly regularly and it is very easy to catch.

I found the 2.2 rather twitchy at high speak on bumpy country roads too, I wouldn't have one that fast again. 2.9 sounds a good idea.

I love fast ratio racks, I have to say! The grasser is 0.8 turns lock to lock and it has a huge amount of lock as well, and it is awesome to slide around.

With 4x4 though, especially in the wet, you can get some torque steer which can weight the steering up a bit, 2.4 turns could give your arms a bit of a workout in those conditions.

I have a recon rack and it does just over 3 turns lock to lock, definitely not as much 3.5. It may not have as much lock as a new rack, I don't know but it is plenty quick enough for road use and I haven't needed to reverse and try again to get round a corner yet. My rack was £15+vat exchange so I don't think I'll swap it.
