Exhaust - stainless to steel
Avoneer - 9/9/05 at 09:42 PM

What problems would arise with me using a steel manifold and stainless collector and can?

Cheers,

rust?

I know my headers will rust eventually, but I can't justify buying some stainless ones when mine are fine.

Large bore and 4-2-1.

Thinking of fitting the can straight to the end of the collector so the end is up near the scuttle, or do I really need the length in the middle of the exhaust?

Hellfire - still want to try your headers for size some time.

Cheers,

Pat...

Pat - make us an offer if you want the system...

Why not ceramic coat them? They'll look smart, won't rust and, depending on whether you believe the marketing blurb or not, the process could even release a few more horses.

Hellfire - would love to try it first and see how it fits my chassis...

In terms of exhaust pipes (before I get shot down in metallurgical terms!) welding stainless to mild steel is fine, just mig them together, stainless or mild wire works just fine.

Obviously the mild steel bits will rust, as was kindly pointed out!

Consider yourself shot down !

I do!!

.............you know as well as I know that it works fine though! Just wouldn't want to trust my life to the strength of the welds!

Avoneer - 11/9/05 at 10:42 PM

Wasn't gonna weld the two together, just use the steel downpipes and collector and stainless can.

Anyone know the answer to my question on the effect of bolting the can to the end of the down pipes and having it mid car mounted rather than a long collector and the can "normally" mounted next to the passenger?

Cheers,

Pat...

as long as it won't blow crap at me when you take me for a ride, i shouldn't think it matters really. the R1ot doesn't have a lot of pipework between collector and silencer, so i'd think it'd be good enough.

I'm not sure if I fully understand the question Pat,
but if your using a packed can, then the nearer it is to
the engine the hotter it will get,
therefore the quicker the packing will degenerate.

as in don't put the ~8" link pipe in, just run the silencer straight onto the end of the collector.

i'm sure i've seen it done before, just can't quite think on what.
