Cortina Steering Rack
SDS7 - 19/9/05 at 05:41 PM

Is it possible or what mods are needed to use a Cortina Steering rack, in a book chassis as Escort one are very thin on the ground.

Cortina rack just isn't suitable 4" wider than the Escort and the Escort rack is already too wide.

Two ways round this
(1) Get a Mk1 Escort and fit the track rods from the Cortina

or

(2) Get a Sierra manual steer rack and get it narrowed. -- most of the Locost suppliers can do this.

...or go buy a q/rack from one of the rally traders.

BTW you can use a cortina rack on wide track cars (wide bodied F27 IIRC)

Cortina track rods are exactly the same length as Escort ones (was hoping to use this trick to avoid steering rack extensions).

Also the Cortina rack does not fit very well into a +4" chassis, I tried it with mine and the input shaft is almost exactly inline with one of the upright chassis rails (second one back from front which upper wishbone attaches to).
