Anyone really,

Having failed to come up with a manta 1.8 gearbox, i'm going to go with a carlton box

What i want to know is
a) why is a manta box better?

and

b)what problems will i have using a carlton box?

Many Thanks

Liam

reet!

the Carlton box has a rubber "donut" type mount at the rear fot the propshaft.

It's not a major issue but it is not as nice as the manta 1800 one which is just like the Ford type 9 being a push in type fitting where the prop just slides onto the spline.

worth a look on www.mantaclub.org (the club website) in the classifieds to see if anybody is breaking an 1800 manta. Somebody will be.

I've used a good local guy that runs a firm called Only Opels. I think he's on the internet. He will definately know and can get either. HTH

only opels is a good opel breaker, knows his stuff seriously, but then knows how much it's worth too, 1800 manta box will be £75 absolute minimum from him, prob £100.

i don't know what to do, i can get a carlton box fairly easily but is a manta box iworth the hassle for it being better, do you know what i mean?

This is how I skipped the "donut"
Sierra splines from prop welded to donut piece from Omega prop, made to center on outcoming axle from box. Using shortened Sierra prop.

Look in pic archive.

did you weld it up yourself?
would it need to be balanced, looks like a decent solution well done

NS Dev - 2/11/05 at 11:36 PM

Shouldn't need to be balanced but will need to be absolutely concentric.

Looked at the pic and still not sure how that works!?

prop spline is female, so is welded on bit, how do they attach together!?

Liam, I'll call a chap tomorrow about a gearbox. He owes me a favour so I might be able to get you one, I'll let you know as soon as I do! I don't now need the box that I was getting from him.

The female splines goes through the 3 winged bit. Solid in the end against box. With a drilled hole that centers outcoming axle from box (same that centers donut).

All made in a machine called svarv in swedish don´t know what its called in english. Big machine where you can make round metal things.... (well I´m not english)

could I not just have a custom prop made to bolt up between the donut thing and the sierra diff? I was going to have one made anyway

really appreciate that NS!
