If its from a GTE then the starter will be on the wrong side to mate to a 2.0 XE.

Edit : Ned if yours is still Free to a good home let me know

Cheers

ive spoken to the guy on the phone and he said that is a rally prepared 1800 with an ohc engine. I asked if it was a GTE and he said he didn't know. surely he'd know if it WAS a GTE. What questions can I ask to determine if its GTE or not.

he was a really nice guy by the way,

all i need to know is whether the starter on the gearbox i need is on the exhaust or inlet side

cheers guys

if it's from an 1800 then it's the right one.

Snap his hand off at £50!!

sorry I didn't see this earlier!

Spoke to the chap I mentioned before and he is messing me about so I doubt that I can help you.

Starter on the 1800 is on the drivers (off) side, it's on the passenger (near) side on the GTE. You can't really say inlet/exhaust side on the GTE as they are both on the same side, it's not a crossflow head design!

1800 manta uses totally different engine to the GTE, the 1800 is exactly the same basic block as the XE 16v.

hope you get it!

Thanks NS between looking at photos in neds archive and the guy on the phone in the dark and rain we established it was the correct one going up to him on wednesday all being well.

Just to confirm its just the front half of the bellhousing thats different and the internals from the 2 litre are interchangable

are there any other bits which i will need or be useful?

thats exactly right on the bellhousing bit. The front half of the gearbox casing unbolts (I'll u2u you some instructions, it's not entirely obvious how it comes off!) and will then fit straight onto the rear casing and gear cluster from the 2.0 GTE 'box.

Why, is the 1800 one broken? Or are you just preparing for the future?

Certainly the GTE 2.0 boxes are easy enough to come by!

You'll need the gearlever and the extension housing (the steel bit that the lever mounts on) as well, plus the clutch release arm and release bearing will be needed too.

ps, once you have it, I should be able to sort you out a nice extended extension housing to move the gearlever back by around 5 inches, which is nice!

thanks guys, especially NS. Can't thank you enough

no the 1800 bos isn't broken just preparing for the future

Today, I picked up my bargain £50 manta gearbox and prop from a nice guy in the middle of nowhere who I emailed on the off chance he had one in his garage.

He was selling off manta bits on ebay and i thought why not give it a go. Week later and Bingo

I have also during my search procured a second Manta 1800 box which is a bonus

nice one!

The persistence paid off!!

Next thing, it's worth sticking a new prop seal i the back of the gearbox to save having to do it when it starts leaking! Clean up the front end of the prop with fine wet and dry first and then get a seal set from this chap, he is excellent:

oil seals from "bearings!" on ebay

you will only need the rear seal but the front one is worth having should you need to take the front off the box.
