Zetec piston rings
Danozeman - 12/12/05 at 03:49 PM

As above. Wheres the best cheapest place to get rings from for my zetec?

The oil rings are shot.

Not really what you want to hear, but wouldn't it be cheaper to bung in another motor for 100 quid?

By the time you have bought your piston rings and all the gaskets etc to bodge up a worn engine, you might as well have bought a good lump whch needs no attention.

Cheers

Mark

Don't know if it's any help but Cambridge rebores are pretty helpful . They are based in Burwell near Newmarket if thats any help. Think the phone number is 01638 741069 . Or Randall's in Hepworth ,Bury? not dealt with them but closer to you 01359 251888

IIRC i think i was quoted about £70 for a set. I dont think you can buy just the oil rings as they come in sets of 12 (4x3)

big_wasa - 12/12/05 at 07:58 PM

Mine where £57.50 But for some strange reason the other engine sizes are £97.50 From Burton's

Ive been down this route and wouldn’t do it again.

Keep the gaskets, sump, oil and water pumps even head as spares and buy another motor.

A good motor wont be more than £100 ish and if you break yours for spares you will get some of that back.

For a zetec to have ware like that you may have more problems than just the rings, you could be looking at a full rebuild. Bits for this alone are going to cost you over £300 and then you have labour for honning ect..

You can buy a 2l very low mileage black top from most breakers for £250 with a guarantee...

So to sum up DONT DO IT.

Just my 2p worth.

Regards Warren

Edit ...

The reason ive got a spare set of rings is that there was part of one of the oil scrapper rings missing( two outer shims). When I complained to Burtons they insisted this could not happen. I insisted that it had and that it is not likley that I had broken the ring (very flexi)and that I wasnt trying it on. They sent me a complete new set for free.

Are you sure the oil is coming up the bores and not down the valve stem seals, When does it smoke?

No oil in the engine mate. Its been out of the car for ages. I took the pistons out to clean them up and the oil rings are siezed in the pistons. Everything else is fine. No bore wear etc.

Iv had them soaking in diesel since friday but havent had time to check them.
