Optimum castor angle
omega 24 v6 - 6/4/06 at 09:07 PM

With all the castor angle posts there is a wide variety of sizes for the top bone offset from say book dimensions to 25mm offset. What if any would be the setbacks from having say 30mm of offset? Would the camber be severe on turning corners?
Would it just be better at self centering?
Would there be wheel shudder (shopping trolley style) at high speeds?
I'm going to try for 22mm to 25 mm when I make my top bones again as I'm finding out that most things so far need a prototype and then the real thing

The greater the caster the "heavier" the steering will be. As I understand it.

So will my 30mm offset fcuck ups be useable?????????

i doubt it will be that bad, certainly not unuseable.

As the front of these cars is so light, I doubt that you'll find it a problem. You will have the bonus that the car will self-centre easily.

its different

the oposide of self centering is steering reaction...

Sow lets call it steering response...

its simply because eather wheel to move the car will need first to pass the x degrees you gave it.

think this one is like everything in live..

not to much and not to less (good english?)

Sow for Quick steering response offer up some self centering or vice versa..

Tks

I made my bones to give 22mm setback, which was enough to pass the SVA (Tester said 'Bloody hell, I wasn't expecting that!). I have a 2.0 pinto so the castor ia amplified by the weight, if your engine is lighter then more setback may be required. I would say 22mm is a minimum, and 30 would be towards the upper limit but certainly ideal.

Me is a happier man tonight then.
Had a querie (sp) with the guy that supplied the bright bar that i drilled and tapped 18*1.5. It was not very magnetic and I wondered what it was. It was nice and easy to machine so I didn't think it was S/Steel. He said it was likely to be some of the EN types as it was from a shaft (bearings were fitted) and welding it would be OK. Anyone care to back him up or shoot him down?
the welding looks fine although the steel has taken on a blue appearence after welding.
