Is my kingpin angle too great here? Or is something wrong with the mounts? I take it the shock should be able to point straight up and not tilt towards the back of car? (These have bushing not rosejoints so you cannot angle)

I'm not sure, but can i ask where you got those lower ball joints and what type they are please?
They came on ebay along with the top mounts + wishbones - so not sure 
bottom ball joint looks a Maxi one to me same as used by MK and others.
Please forgive me if this is a ridiculous suggestion but is your top wishbone upside down? I made mine from Ron Champion's book and they look
simlar to yours and I think on mine the long tube of the top wishbone is at the back.

Not sure which way is front and which is the back - the long arm of the top wishbone should go to the front, so that the top balljoint ends up behind
the lower one (ideally, about 22mm behind, but this varies according to the maker).
Anyway - you don't need much clearance, as long as it doesn't actually touch at any point though the suspension travel... or is it actually
touching?

If they are "book" wishbones, then the top one needs to be offset by quite a bit to get the correct castor angle, and this does put the wishbone quite close to the shock.
OK, it does clear the top wishbone, I was just expecting it to be centered!
to flip the top wishbone would make the situation worse, maybe my castor is a little overboard - David what angle does setting the top joint 22mm
behind the bottom give?

Can't remember! I know that it's enough to give self-centering steering with all other settings (toe-in, etc) totally normal.

Setting it back gives a better caster angle which gives better self centering. If you go by book dimensions alone you will have very little self
centering.

I think on mine the long tube of the top wishbone is at the back.
This is of course rubbish. An optical illusion given by the picture. I've just checked the car and the long tube is at the front and the
clearance between spring and wishbone is tight.
