I am in need of some decent bolts (preferably allen head type) for my wishbone and shock mountings.
What grade should I be looking for and where is the best place to get them from?
I always use AN series bolts on my suspension bought from Clarendon Eng Supplies or Trident Racing. They are a good consistent quality, available in
smooth shank lengths in 1/8" increments, have just enough thread without having to cut any off and are plated. However only imperial are
available.
If you want industrial fasteners Trident again will supply. Buy Unbrako or Alen 10.9 or 12.9.
For general use nuts and bolts Namric are very good.

Pretty much all SHCS are 12.9 grade. You usually have to go out of your way to find anything lower grade.
Most torx headed fasteners are 10.9 or 12.9 grade.
Hex head bolts are normall 8.8 grade (unless you buy them from B&Q/Focus etc when they are 4.4 grade)
Buy your bolts from a local hardware/fastenings engineering supplier. You can get exactly what you want then, and it will be cheaper than the
alternatives.
Edited to say there are respected fastenings manufacturers, and it is best to buy from them if you can. As JB rightly points out!

I went to some of my local ones this afternoon and they were about as usefull as ....well something unusfull...
As an aside, does anyone know what grade ARP bolts are - specifically conrod bolts on a crossflow. I refuse to pay those prices if they are just standard bolts.
ARP make the best engine fasteners. They know there stuff and the customer service is excellent. I will not fit anything but ARP in my engines. I have
not a bad thing to say about them and that is very very rare coming from me.
Yes they are worth every pound you will pay. Follow the installation instructions and you can fit and forget.
Buy them.

I've always used Namrick for bolts. Not sure if they're the cheapest but they always send out the stuff quickly and they have a good selection of bolt types / sizes...
