removing diff
Rick - 2/7/03 at 05:16 PM

Can anyone tell me how to remove the diff on an Escort axle?
Hunted high and low for the Bl**dy manual. I know its here somewhere under all these parts.

I have a converted axle with no inards and a perfectly good axle with no conversion

Cheers Rick

Easy, whip of the brake back plates, bash out the half shafts, undo all the bolts around the diff and out it plops, two of us can change a diff in situ at the track in under 10 mins...

Well done that man

Viper 2 problems. One your will laught at.
I spent ages trying to undo the backplate bolts with a spanner until I notices the access holes to get a socket in

The second though, do you actualy clump the back plate as it is in the way of the end of the half shafts that don't seem to want to budge.
Or am I going about this the wrong way too?

sorry mate should have been a bit clearer, you realy need a slide hammer to get the shaft out...this would bolt over the wheel studs, got anything you could improvise? i made mine out of an old half shaft...don't suppose you have an old half shaft, no probably not...how about bolting a bit of flat plate accross the studds (wider than the back plate) and belting that alternating either side of the hub (if you get my drift) you only need to move it about 10mm to frr the bearing...
hope this helps.

....or use an old steel wheel rim bolted on loosely backwards and use that as a slide hammer/hammer bashing implement...

Just don't repeat my classic 'Doh!' moment - bumped out the first half-shaft, wondered where the sound of running liquid was coming from...
... nice big puddle of oil on the floor.

It's a good idea to drain the axle first!
