cars/bikes with 80 mm speedo, 0-120 mph
02GF74 - 1/3/07 at 01:02 PM

anyone know of any cars or bikes that have speedometers in a round case that fits 80 mm diameter hole? Ideally in the range of 0-110 mph but no more tha 0-140, iseall 0-120).

Failing that, a dash that has a speed of that size that in theroy can be cut to get it out (make sense).

I guess what it boils down to is a speedo face, 80 mm dia, 0-120 that is cheap

vvvvv nope; MGB is same size as land rover (and most of smiths) which are 4 inch = 100 mm).,

^^^^^^ hmmmm, maybe MGB is smaller ......????

I could be (very) wrong, but I think that MGB (and the like) have 80mm speedo's, I don't have one to hand to vcheck, but I'm sure someobody must...
It would probably be a suitable speed range aswell.

Steve.

I assume you want this to be electronically driven? Otherwise you are going to have lots of fun with sorting the calibration.

In this case you need something from a motorbike, but actually there weren't that many that used dials (all LCD now).

So,

Suzuki SV650 (non-faired model is best, as the others can't be separated from other instruments). Not that cheap though. Reads to 140mph (I think). Make sure you get an MPH one.

There are a few other bikes which may work.
CBR600 is probably the most common, but look out for getting the right year.

You will still have to adjust the pulse frequency with an electronic unit, but at least its electronic...

No nice solutions (as far as I can tell). Either lots of bother, or reasonable expense.

Matt

p.s. I have sv650s which includes a rev counter built in, so itn't ideal.

Our MGB has 100mm FYI

I tried this , using an electronic speedo from an alfa156,. Very smart piece of kit but impossible to calibrate,
A speedo from an older car may be easier but from modern cars the speedo feed is often tied in with the ABS pick up and is often averaged over all 4 wheels.

I had got to the stage of having 16 magnets on the prop, then when it seemed fine up to 30mph it would go pearshaped abve 35mph, reading miles off.
Went down to 5mags on the drive shaft but after almost 2 weeks gave up, even installed variable resisters in the wiring to try to adjust things, got no where.

But ,, Good luck anyway.
