What coating on uprights?
nitram38 - 11/4/07 at 02:31 PM

Here is a picture of my "raw" rear uprights.
They need the lugs for the calipers welding on yet plus a good clean up.
Unfortunately the flash makes them look more untidy than they actually are.
I would like to chrome or zinc plate them, but I know that things can become brittle (requiring de-embrittlement).
I have also seen them powder coated, but I have also seen this flaking off.
Which do you think is best long term? I hate rusty car parts!!!!

I'd just go with a few coatsd of smooth hammerite spray - the finish will be good enough if you prime it all up first, it's cheap, quick and really easy to top up in the future if/when they get a few scrapes and rusty spots.

Very nice work though - I'm always very jealous of peoples fabrication ability (I have precisle none - but I could blame my lack of the correct tools, if I wanted to be a bad workman!)

My favoured method is to get them really clean, then get them warm and apply 4-5 thin coats of good quality red oxide primer followed by 4-5 coats of Plastikote black satin spray enamel. This seems to produce a very durable finish which looks good and is easy to touch up in the future.

Powdercoat them, it wont flake if its done properly ie, bead blasted, etched and then coated.

I'd definately go for the clean, red-oxide and any type of topcoat - hammerite smooth, normal car spray - owt that's easy to touch up.
