i'm having my back axle powder coated on wednesday. I've made some steel plates that bolt over each end and over the diff and used cardboard as a gasket so nothing can get in.

one question is what to do with the breather?

and does shot blasting and powder coating damage any exposed threads?

You should definitely plug the breather to stop sand/grit getting in although you would be best to clean it out afterwards as some may still get in somewhere.

Threads can be damaged by blasting depending on the media being used. Powder coating will clog up any threads so unless you want to run a tap down them afterwards you should protect them with old bolts etc.

I would drain any oil out first too.

why not tap & plug the breather and put old bolts in to the open threads.

Which type of axle ? --- if it is an English axle be aware that in places the casing can get paper thin due to corrosion.

yeh its a english axle. is it a problem?
