Steering wheel "buzz"
David Jenkins - 30/4/07 at 07:58 AM

I get a fair bit of engine vibration through the steering wheel as I go along. Drove a fair distance on major A roads on Sunday, and almost had that "white finger" complaint that machine operators get!

My steering rack has the rubber whatsits under the mounts, and the engine sits on mounting rubbers, so I don't know why I'm getting so much buzz up the steering column.

It's not a problem with the steering itself, which is firm and positive, with no wheel shake or any general looseness.

The only thing I can think of is the upper support - the plastic bearing just above the top UJ - or the 2-bolt fixing at the top, could be transmitting the engine vibration.

Am I the only one with this problem? Are there any solutions I could try?

cheers,
David

that is very strange - not heard of that before.

does it shake when you are stationary and idling or revving the engine!??!?!

if the engine was the cause, then why should the steering column/rack.wheel move and not the chassis? you are sitting in a seat attached to the chassis that should be moving in sync with the steering wheel so the net movement should be cancelled out.

(actually since your arms/hands have joints, they will take yo some of the vibes if the chassis was shjking to so ^^^ isn;t gonna work).

David

Get a grip of the joint where the steering column ends and the middle section to the rack begins and give a shake, this is where i had my rattle and i found the new bush to be a poor fit.

I've started to get the same issue but strangely enough only in my right hand and then only in my index finger

Whilst checking around under the bonnet I did notice that my alternator drive belt had stretched and that I had adjusted the tension out to the point where my alternator is JUST touching the steering column/shaft. I plan on changing the belt ASAP.

I should emphasise that this isn't a major issue - just an annoyance!

The whole chassis vibrates when the engine's running, both when stationary and on the move. It's only the steering wheel that bothers me a bit, and then only on long journeys.

Maybe I need to get softer engine mounts...

(...and this probably should now be in another section! )

sounds like something on the engine touching something on or near the column
