de dion tube
oadamo - 1/5/07 at 08:44 PM

hi ive started making the parts for a de dion tube but do people build them with any camber into them.

JoelP - 1/5/07 at 08:46 PM

can do, or you can shim it later to adjust angles - also useful if it distorts.

ive only cut the shape out of one side with a flat on the other if you no what i mean. so i can use the flats to get it level i hope. how much shim would you need for what amount of camber. because k ford tyres by me has a full lazer setup thing that can do camber/ toe in/toe out he said £50 for a full setup so i could take a load of shims with me when its done.do you make them 1mm or 1/2 mm and just keep adding them cus if you put a spacer at the bottom there wont be much contact with the hub or doesnt it matter

The shims required to adjust the camber and toe on sierra hub carriers are tiny. See the attached spreadsheet. Small adjustments at the hub carrier make big adjustments at the wheel rim.

oh i dont have spreadsheet at home on my laptop

Open office calc will open it and it's free !

the cars only gonna be used on the track and the odd blast on the road

I built mine with a little bit of camber and a little bit of toe-in. My thinking was along the lines of - I can't expect 100% accuracy and I'd rather err on the negative camber/toe-in side than on the positive camber/toe-out side.

I worked it out at the time (several years ago now) and I think I was aiming for something like 3mm static negative camber and 3mm of toe in (1.5mm each wheel). I worked out the spacers I needed just happened to be the thickness of some hacksaw blades I had lying around so I used them to hold the parts in place while I tack welded them.

I then assembled the axle temporarily and checked that I did indeed have negative camber and a bit of toe-in. To measure toe-in I just strapped a straight edge to the wheel and measured the gap between the straight edge and the chassis side rails. To measure the camber I just put the car on the ground and used a large framing square set against the rim.

I can fine tune it once it's on the road.

Cheers,
Craig.

When making a de Dion tube to set both the camber and toe-in all that is required is a level surface and a precision (or digital) spirit level.

I think most Locost builders are more likely to have copious quantities of old hacksaw blades myself....

iam not far off finishing it hes a pic of the caliper brackets ive gotta file the inside but i think they turned out well ive just gotta weld the tube to join the hub brackets together

i didnt have anything the right size to cut around for the big hole so i have to move a washer around a bit at a time and use that lol

well fek me i just went to try them on the hubs then i realised that the hubs where off a 4x4 and have the caliper fitting on them lol. i looked at the drawing and just started making them without thinking lol.
anyone want them u2u me ill post them for free as i have no need ive checked them and they do fit but iam not fileing them lol you can but they fit anyway

i no iam a tit
