trach rod ends again
myeates - 21/5/07 at 12:13 PM

hi guys i have run into a problem with my track rod ends, the steering reack is the imperial thread mk1 escort and hubs are cortina (unknown model) just went to tighten the rod ends up and the taper part that goes up through the hub is too small of a diameter so i cant tighten the things up its about 1mm overall too small.

when i got the rod ends they were supposed to be mk1 escort ones

does anyone have any ideas

If you wnat, I can measure mk2 escort taper - these fit cortina mkl3/4/5 uprights.

Can it be that the uprights have been modified - say sierra size (if bigger?) in which case you will have a problem.

yes please if you can i will also measure the hole in the hub from the top, hopefully they havent been modified, it did come of a standard cortina and just found receipt the hubs are mk5

You NEED an Escort MK2 rack and Escort MK2 track rod ends (which are the same part as Cortina Mk3-5 ones).

If you have the the Cortina rack it is possible to make a DIY Escort MK2 rack by fitting the complewte track rod assemblies to the Escort Mk1 rack.

thought that may be the case have you any idea where i can get some track rods from or is it best to buy new rack

i know the thread is different but is the taper a different size too then i thought ford always used the same

also the rod ends only screw on about 15mm at the moment is this enought or am i goin to need to extend them

I'm sure this has cropped up before. Isn't there a specific TRE that will fix this problem, early RS2000 maybe?

sorry couldnt find anything about this only lots of other track rod problems. i always thought there would be an easy solution but need to know exactly which tre it is or it looks like im going to have to get another rack

Trouble is RS2000 rod ends do exactly the opposite, the track rod thread is metric but the tapers are imperial.

RS2000 struts were based on Corsair/Capri parts, unlike the Escort the Capri never went fully metric.

It might be possible to use Triumph TR6/Triumph 2000 (non PAS models) track rod ends they will fit the rack thread but I am to sure if the tapers are right.

looks like im getting a mk2 rack then be easier than messing anymore

anyone want to buy a nearly new recon mk1 rack

Actually I have a Mk1 rack and I used I believe "avenger" trackrod end. I will Check to confirm but I have done it. Its been a while since I bought them, but I will make another post soon as I have to goto the parts shop anyway for a new starter pinion.

02GF74 - 22/5/07 at 07:53 AM

taper legnth 15.4 mm
diameter top 12.4 mm
bottom 14.3 mm

mk1 escort rack uses imperial threads; you can replace the trac rods ends - I had a pair but sold them with rack to someone on here to too bad eh? ... they are quite hard to find and it is a bit of a palaver remving and fitting them; you might as well get a mk2 rack as it won't cost that much more.

thanks mate its a good bit larger i think i will get mk2 rack then it will be easier for parts in the future thanks very much guys
