Caliper help needed
Jasper - 18/7/07 at 04:07 PM

So I've now got my lovely Revolution alloys on the front of my car, and then tried to fit the Sierra Willwood Midilite kit only to find there is nowhere near enough room to fit the calipers. Revolution are making a new design of alloy at the end of the year so I'll get a fronts then which will have more clearance and I'll get 10mm less on the offset and fit 10mm spacers to give me more clearance again. A pain but worth it.

However in the meantime I need some brakes. So the question is whats the best single sided piston caliper you can get for Sierra fitment. Is it just standard Sierra ones, or are there anything better available? Did they fit anything better to the Cosworth ?

There are 2 standard sierra ones

1 - non-ABS for 240mm discs

2 - ABS for 260mm discs (also used on granadas and RS turbo escorts)

ABS ones are a little bigger but I'm not sure what the difference in piston size is - the main thing is they fit strait over the slightly bigger 260mm discs (if you don't have these ones already that is)

but there is also the cossie 4x4 / granada 24v cossie caliper - its even bigger and uses 278mm discs on the cossies
(but I don't know what discs/ spacers if any you'll need to make them fit your car)

sierra cossie 2wd's have 283mm discs and massive 4 pot cast iron calipers that weigh a ton

dax sell an adapter plate to move the non-ABS type caliper so that you can use it with the 278mm cossie 4x4 discs - but this does move it a bit closer to the wheel

Just a thought - Can you fit smaller discs to get around the problem? Capri discs are 245mm iirc and fit under smaller wheels.

Got a set of 260 Dia disks pad's and calipers in the boot of the car just come of my MNR ( changing to Cortina's ).

Let me know if you want some measurments / are intrested.

Thanks for the info - the disks with the kit are 283mm - so I wont get standard Sierra calipers over those anyway, only the massive 4 poty cossie ones which wont fit I'm sure behind the wheels. So I'll have to get styandard sierra disks and calipers in the meantime. Are the standard Sierra 240mm disks twin vented ones or solid?

Razman, the problem is with the width of the caliper on the inner face of the wheel, not space between caliper and inside edge of the rim, so smaller disks wont help.....but thanks

std 240mm ones are vented (24mm thick) - same as the 260mm ones

but there is a 1.3l sierra version with solid discs (also 240mm I think) and its got even smaller calipers, but these are very rare

how much space do you have with the 240mm discs and std calipers ?

Jasper - 18/7/07 at 05:56 PM

The disks I have are 283mm, and I've got 30mm between the inside of the face of the wheel and the face of the disk, which should be enough.

If it's not I can fit some wheel spacers, as long as they're not too big it shouldn't affect the steering.

If anybody knows the width of a sierra capiler from from centre line to outside edge that would be useful.

BTW, what's the width of the sierra vented caliper, as the one I have is 24mm.

this might help you

thats the caliper for the 260mm discs, and its ~80mm wide from the mounting lugs
(ignore my 5mm spacers, they are for granada 5 stud discs)
