Crushable Column Tube
The Doc - 13/8/07 at 06:20 AM

Anyone know the length of an uncrushed section of a Sierra column tube and - is it possible to crush one accidentally by too much 'mauling' of the coulmn when fitting?

or does it take serious force to do that?

I'm probably being paranoid as its getting nearer to test time but!............

If you crushed accidentally the odds are it won't have crushed straight.

My crush tube on an adjustable column looks fully compressed to me but i belive the two sliding UJ conections, i also have a small collapsable section in the engine bay, should meet SVA regs.
The collapsable tube will not figure for SVA as long as you have the sliding UJ joint and an angle in the column between rack and steering.
A striaght line between rack and column could punch the steering column towards the driver in a crash an angle will fold it up.

The collapsibale bit that looks squashed is supposed to llok like that - that's the adjustable column.

The triangular section slides in and out of the round section which takes the impact.

As long as you have a dog leg before the column, you'll be fine.
