Setting up the steering

OK I got through the SVA

I do realise that self centring is desirable but for now I have no intention of remaking my wishbones. I don't think I want to be driving about with the toe out arrangement which I set up for SVA.

Self centring aside, what's a good compromise on toe in - out etc for general handling?

Zero i would have thought, then you can go from there.

mine (indy) is .5 deg toe in

Front wheels 0 to 3/32" toe-in across the axle

Important thing wheels should never toe-out as that will cause the car to be twitchy striaght when line running.

Ideally you need a fraction of toe in to compensate for the forces exerted on the front wheels in motion, bringing them parallel.

Amount of toe depends on a number of factors, the scrub radius provides the torque to preload the steering so cortina uprights with their lareg scrub radius probably need quite a lot of toe in. FWD cars on the other hand, have their wheels pulled forwards by engine thrust (rather than backwards by drag) so they usually specify a static toe out. I ran my mx5 with toe out for a short while, it still steered OK & wasn't badly behaved but used to turn -in incredibly sharply. Going to zero static toe (the mx5 has zero scrub radius) restored normal service. Maybe a little toe out could be used to counteract an inherent understeer - anyone tried that?

Zero is a good compromise - that's what I've got anyway!
