Brake Pipes
davepro - 30/11/07 at 10:20 AM

Hi All

Things are moving on well.

However I am now looking to plumb in the brakes and this has raised a question.

I am using a sierra master cylinder with sierra rear calipers and cortina front calipers. What size pipe pipe do I need?

Hope this makes sence.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Standard 3/16" should do you just fine.

I think your only decision is whether to use Kunifer or Copper.

Thanks guys, what is the differance in the types of pipe? Is one better then the other?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Whats the practical difference between the two with Kunifer being Cupro Nickel and having had a quick look slightly dearer??

Edited to say you beat me to it Dave (fair though as its your thread)!!

I've just done a search but cannot find the previous discussion on the merits of copper and kunifer.

It was generally acknowledged that Kunifer is much superior to copper in terms of strength and durability and if I remember correctly, I believe somebody said that copper is banned for brake pipes in Sweden.

Having said that, I have used copper on the Phoenix and I expect the brake pipes to last the life of the car without any problems.

It is a case of "The choice is yours"

I personally would not use copper, particularly as it tends to work harden, not good as vibrations can cause this. Trouble is the cheap flaring tools will only reliably flare copper. Decent ones are about 100 notes!

So like said depends on your view, and if you think vibration will be a problem (i.e. engine hard mounted) then don't use copper.
