MK 5 Cortina Hubs. Splitting Apart
Kelvin - 17/6/02 at 11:29 AM

Hi All,

First post of many I am sure!

I started to take my front hubs apart at the weekend to replace the discs, wheels bearings and check over the calipers.

I now have two lumps of metal instead of one and am a bit stuck. I have removed the bearing no problem and the caliper, so I am left with the upright with attached backing plate and hub and attached disk.

Here's the problem.

I sprayed the bolts liberally with penetrating oil, pukka stuff, not WD or similar and left for a while before trying to unbolt. Not a chance!

After much swearing I am now looking at the blow torch with new affection. Whats the best way to heat the bolts/area to get the suckers out? Any help gratefully received!

Cheers,

kelvin

Are you talking about the bolts that hold the disc to the hub(rotating bit)if so they have lock tabs and are normaly quite rusty, leaving it to soak normaly helps,or take it to a garage or tyre place and get them to gun it off.hth John.

And they're apart!

Bit of oil, bit of a play with a blow torch and out they came!

Only down side is is that the caliper is shot. Oh well!

Kelvin,

Don't bin them - you can usually get recon calipers on an exchange basis from most decent local parts suppliers.
