I have one of the rally design splined steering shafts and need to cut an extend it. What steel tube should I use to do this. Wall thickness and steel
grade?
Also need to make some engine mounts and I would like to make them tubular so again what material should I use?
thanks

steering - 4-5mm thick
mounts - 2in tube 2mm thick
grade - should rust, not that important so long as it's thick enough
you can tell by the long gap before anyone answered this that no one has the faintest idea of the grade their using, 'but I just found it in the
scrap skip!'.

me I'll just use any old crap so long as it's cheap
cardboard now that's a building material
MILD STEEL eg. plain oridinary low carbon general purpose structural steel.
Use anything else and you could end up with failed welds.
If you weld higher strength steels you would need to heat treat the part --- no big deal for a small part.
