Gear Change
LBMEFM - 22/12/07 at 08:33 AM

It is coming to the point soon on my MK Indy - Fireblade build to decide whether to go for Paddle Change or Gear Stick. Drove a gear stick sequential box felt great but the paddle change looks good.
So please help me make up my mind with your experiences.
Which system should I use?

I'd go for a stick every time. Less hassle, simpler to install, faster, more positive feel. Just use a cable with small rod ends and not a mechanical linkage, and arrange for the knob to be immediately adjacent to the rim of the wheel (within an inch).

paddle shift every time you only have to watch the BEC vids

oh and you can keep both hands on the wheel

the linkage is exactly the same as the other gear linkages cable or rod and pivot

Iv'e had both and would say the paddle has the edge in terms of useability especially if coupled with a trickshifter which cuts the engine when changing up, mine also has autoblip on downchanges which is a godsend when hard braking.
Whichever system you decide on, try to have as few joints in it as possible with no play in them. The ST supplied stick linkage i had felt quite sloppy, although in practise it worked reasonably well.

i'd go for a paddle change rod system, wouldn't bother with cables there not a great feel!
