Help please - What Size Taper is used to drill for the standard Maxi BallJoint?
Ares - 4/2/08 at 01:31 PM

Hi All,

Could someone please help me identify which size Taper drill can be used for the Maxi BallJoint - I assume it is the same size as the taper in the bottom of most Ford Sierra Uprights?

And also, where to get said taper for the best price? It will be used 2-4 times at the most, so although I never usually buy second rate tools, Absolute Top quality (and therefore price) isn't wanted/needed in this case!

Cheers & TIA

Don't know. I do know that the mini seems to use a 2" per foot (or 1 in 6) taper for its ball joints. Maxi may be the same. The other common imperial size is 1.5" per foot or 1 in 8. It would seem to make sense that the sierra is the narrow one and the maxi is the wider one.

I've just ordered a 2" per foot taper from US eBay. Look for Xkut. It was a shade under £45 including postage to the UK. I'll see if it's any good when it arrives.

I couldn't find one the right size in the UK. Some say that Axminster sell a tool that happens to be the right size for some cars but I couldn't confirm it.

Edit to say that other tapered hole sizes are measured in degrees. 2" per foot is slightly less than a 10° included angle. One doesn't properly fit the other.

The Sierra upright does not have the correct taper for the maxi balljoint.

Some peple have (ab)used one of the cheap hand reamers that Axminster sell that is intended for opening holes in light steel or alloy panels etc.

The Axminster handy reamer done the job
on my Sierra uprights.

Plenty of cutting fluid & took it easy. A very good tool for the money.

The final fit is very good. (According to my engineers blue )

A much better fit than the so called direct fit Astra mk 3 ball joint

I took my uprights to MK and they did them for me.

Most of the other manufacturers will do it for you as well I believe.

According to Chris Gibbs the taper of the maxi ball joint is 1 in 8 and the sierra taper is 1 in 6. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dougie/ChrisG!!!

So how does a 1 in 8 taper equate to a taper drill/tool?
As I said above it will be used either twice or at the most four times, so I didn't want to go about spending a fortune on one! I then looked at the Axminster site, and they just list a 19mm taper???

Thanks again!
