Cortina atlas

My axle has a knocking, when going on off power, looks like a bit of play in the diff somewhere,(cortina atlas),but does not whine. Can the mesh of the gears be tightened to reduce this,in other words is it adjustable using shims or something.Or is this normal?.Uj,s and bearings are all new.

Check all the rear suspensions bushes are fully tight before doing anything to the axle, also check the prop-shaft UJs and the bolts on the propshaft coupling are fully tight --- they do do slacken off.

Yeh did all that when I first noticed it.If you grab the flange you can twist it back and forth approx 10deg or so and hear the knock. Its like backlash between the crown and pinion i think.

IIRC it should be around 4 to 8 thou clearance between crownwheel and pinion. This would be around about 8mm at the flange diameter.
