Aligning subframe
trogdor - 13/4/08 at 09:28 PM

Hi, someone has pointed out that when i mount a subframe and suspension from a mondeo in the back of my saab 96 that i need to make sure its aligned properly as the car could handle strange and "crab" however to set the toe in i was planning to use adjustable tie rods on the steering arms. This also locks the uprights in position.

If the subframe is slightly out could this adjust for it?

cheers

I would say not really. you could get both wheels pointing straight ahead with your adjusters but one in front of the other if the subframe isn't aligned properly

Cheers

hi again, still wondering how to align my subframe properly, was hoping to use the pin guides you can buy but they work by slotting into holes in the mondeo body. So am at abit of a loss. Is there some kind of laser alignment tool i can use? all the ones that look good on ebay are the really expensive professional ones!

cheers

As your hubs will be fully adjustable for toe, the subframe does not need to be particularly accurate. There is no production car made that has tollerances more accurate than 2mm, it would be just too expensive.

Make yourself a trammel gauge to measure the diagonals from any points that have longditudinal symetry. If the subframe is out of line, it will only affect the setback and 5mm either way is fully acceptable.
