Steering wheel angle and bush position
andrew-theasby - 13/4/08 at 10:37 PM

Been mounting my steering collumn today, and ive set it so it feels comfy but it runs over the top of the chassis rail near your feet, rather than through the footwell bulkhead. Virtually every car ive been looking at tonight does it through the footwell, am i doing something wrong? I tried it like that and the steering wheel felt to be on an awful angle. What are your thoughts? Thanks

It all dpends on how you like it to feel, there is no right or wrong.

Try driving an old TR6 for instance, the steering wheel comes at right angles out of the dash, but then a classic mini comes up at a steep angle, its not even centre to the driver and angled in.

Regards Mark

Sorry, it's not a very good photo and I didn't make it... BUT! You can just make out the upper column mount beyond the accel pedal...

Cheers,
Steve
ps, there might be a better shot of it in my MNR Gallery somewhere!

mine is over the top

My steering-wheel is following the line from the scuttle. (When sideways looking).

So the rear mounting is over the rail and front lower than the rail.
Watch out, my frame is 360mm high.

Hi over the top is best. Stops it getting in the way of feet ect. Sounds like you have already got it to feel comfortable which is the most important thing. Ideally it should feel better pointing toward your chest. An awful lot of manufacturers have it pointing toward your head and at too steep an angle. One thing that can be done is to make the mounting adjustable at the wheel end for height so you can have some adjustability once you start driving as what feels good sat in the garage feels different when actually driving on the road.

Cheers Matt

Thanks guys, just got me worrying that it might be a bit close to my chest now, the bush wants to be about 3" further back on mine than in those pics, ie not straight above the rail. Ill try sitting in it again tonight.

big wasa, just looked at your picture again, the alloy clamp at the top mount, is that an adjustable part (for fwd and aft position of the steering wheel?) Mine is the same, but clamped further down the black bit, i was thinking this must be to do with it being collapsible, but if its adjustable, does that mean the bush doesnt have to be butted up against the larger triangular section? That would make life easier if so?
