VW rear calipers
Alan B - 23/5/08 at 11:25 AM

When I come to fit my rear calipers, one side wont fit over the disc (VW disc) but the other side is fine.

First thought is the pistion sticking out, i.e not fully back, but it seems very tight, as if the handbrake mechanism has adjusted it outwards and needs winding back.

Can this happen, and if so how do I fix it?
Or if not, any clues?
I'd prefer not to strip it down if someone has a simple answer..

The calipers are new/recon ones.

Cheers,

Alan

What does a physical comparison of the two calipers reveal? Maybe you will have to take the first one off again and see what the difference is. I presume they are identical but mirror images?

Wind the piston back -- screw it in pushing the piston inwards at the same time. Handbrake mechanism lever on the caliper MUST be full back against its' stop

Subject has been covered a few times -- when time comes to fit the cables make sure you leave lots of free play in the cable and pump the pedal to to operate the adjusters.

Cable should then be adjusted so that the handbrake lever only grips the disc at just over 50% of its movenent.

You mean literally screw the piston in?...it seemed keyed somehow but maybe I wasn't turning hard enough?

Oh I was certain it had been mentioned, but my searching threw up nothing.

there is a tool that engages in the slots in the piston face,it turns and pushes the piston at the same time, can be done with swan necks whilst pushing against the piston if you dont have said tool,ps ive got one here if you want to pop over and borrow it

I tend to use an angle grinder spanner and a g-clamp to wind them in, but unless you can support the caliper you do need three hands really
