Anyone running an Atlas with LSD?
owelly - 13/6/08 at 11:02 AM

Having finally got around to fitting my free Atlas with LSD, the car doesn't like corners. At manouvering speeds, the rear tyres are scubbing and whilst driving, any chance for the car to slide around a corner, it does! It's as if the diff is locked solid!
Could it be that the car is too light to overcome the diff? Or could the diff be fubar?
Either way, it's jolly good fun!

scutter - 13/6/08 at 11:07 AM

I removed the LSD atlas from my car, it was set up by comp trans services, so wasn't locked solid.

I found that if you modulated the throttle mid-corner, i.e trying to catch a slide the the locking unlocking action used to try and throw me into the undergrowth.

Much happier now with an open diff, to answer your question, it seems they are prone to locking easily.

A friend has one in his BEC and found it great for starts but cornering ability was impeded.

owelly - 14/6/08 at 06:35 PM

Well, my Atlas has broken. I assume it's a half shaft that has let go. I thought these things were strong???
I'm unsure as what to do now. New half shaft and be more careful. Swap the LSD for an open diff and be more careful or scrap the live rear end and go for a Sierra diff.........

need a volvo axle ?

Trev Borg - 15/6/08 at 02:47 PM

So my question is.

I'm going to fit the same engine / type 9 combo.

I have my axle off the car at the moment, (it would have been back on by now, but stupid fool welded one of the brackets on upside down)

Will the open diff english axle just fail straight away with the torque of the v6, or not?

If its bound to break, what should I fit instead?

Now would be the right time to decide, before fitting the axle I have.

So what are the options. (I would say that I have tendency to drive less like a tw*t than owelly, but this weekends trip to Melbourne kinda disproved that)

So sierra ?

irs would be a ball ache.

De dion, as I already have a live axle setup?

Volvo indeed ?

Jag far too heavy ?

Volvorsport - 15/6/08 at 08:03 PM

ive just built a lsd 240 axle for the ppc escort .

its heavy but not much heavier than an atlas .its based on a dana 30 jeep axle .

heres my locost setup .

After driving owelly's magenta at the ppc 999 thingy, i'm not sure alight weight car with lsd is the thing for me.

How strong is the axle/ diff / shafts

Volvorsport - 15/6/08 at 08:30 PM

peeps use them upto 400hp in heavy road cars , but with lsd .

lsd means a stronger cross pin , and less weak sun/planet gears .

open diff should be fine , mine is .

i should qualify that by saying a torque biasing diff is best - it doesnt rely on wheelspin to work .

For a super strong axle, an alternative to the Volvo, which is just as cheap and has a watts link pivot on the diff cover as std plus 4 link brackets, is the 4ha salisbury as fitted to the reliant scimitar.

They are bloody heavy, but good for pretty much any power you can throw at them, plus they are 3/4 floating, and the jag powr-lock drops straight in (all the bits are interchangeable with all the jag XJ diff bits, despite that being in an IRS casing)

Will sort some photos, we are putting one in a seriously powerful turbo opel kadett coupe at the mo which will hopefully be in PPC mag when we get some photos off to them.

I've just won a halfshaft on t'ebay. I'm gna fit that and see whathappens. If it breaks, I'll be back!!!
Trev, I'm sure you won't be driving anything like I would be. After all, your car is yours!!

Trev Borg - 16/6/08 at 06:16 AM

But, at the stage i'm at now.

Would it not be worth try to get one of these axles, and sticking it in.

Save time later on when i break the english.

I only drive your car like a tw*t because.

1 i'm a shite driver and very little control.
2 i'm a really shite driver and no real sense od what i'm doinh
3 i can't drive my car like that 'cos it will never be finished.
4 i've got tohave fun in it while i can cos some other lead footed moron lights the back end up while in a line of traffic and destroys the rear end. (twice now if i recall)

They're the ones.

The se5 one is narrower than the se6 one by about 3 inches iirc.

If you need the measurements I can get them sometime this week as we have both axles (one here and one at the other workshop)

johnston - 16/6/08 at 06:15 PM

also found in fiat 131s and can take a lot of abuse

i got notes wrong on the day my avatar picture was took clipped a tree stump which flicked us the way we shoulda been heading no damage.

next time around seen an escort that had done same thing atlas bent like a banana and ripped from motor!!!!

have also been told some dumpers run an axle that has interchangable crown wheels and pinions with the 4ha to give better ratios

Trev Borg - 16/6/08 at 09:07 PM

May sound like a daft question, but whats the pcd of the thing.

Are any of the ford fitment?

If not, how do convert them ?

Also the two i showed from ebay both had leaking input shaft seals. Is this a common problem, are a tw8t to replace?

owelly - 16/6/08 at 09:46 PM

This is what the inside of my 'LSD' Atlas looks like!!!

One side of the welds had failed which gave me one wheel drive and lots of banging and shuddering as the shrapnel was sloshed about!!

Volvorsport - 17/6/08 at 01:50 PM

what are the welds for ?

is that a lincoln locker ?

DIY Si - 17/6/08 at 04:46 PM

Looks like someone has welded the diff solid. That wouldn't have helped at all.

owelly - 17/6/08 at 09:21 PM

Yup! It was a cross pin diff that someone had welded-up. When I got the axle, I had a quick peek inside the diff cover, saw it wasn't an open diff and that the wheels turned the same way, and did a gleefull jig. I fitted the axle, complete with the disc conversion that was already attached, and off I went. Sideways.....
I'm now fitting another Atlas from a 2.8 Crapi. It's an open diff but it seems to work!

Volvorsport - 18/6/08 at 09:57 AM

yeah , that wont do your handling any god whatsoever , in fact only good for drifting .

lincoln locker = welded diff
