atlas axle pinion location

here's a question for anyone using a atlas axle,

when the axle's mounted in the car, is the pinion mounted dead centre of the car? see, i don't think it should be, but my godfather is over from australia (he's a mechanic, and is from essex originally. he's also rebuilding a mk1 esocrt) and he thinks my axle is wrong (i've re tubed it) he thinks the pinion should be dead centre of the car, i think the centre of the diff casing should be in the middle

Its offset to the drivers side even using the original tubes. I've had to make adjustments to my chassis to get it to fit.

Mark Allanson has documented this well.

and the tubes are equal length? lol
even after i showed him the original half shafts both being identical length he still didn't beleive me.
he was saying that one tube should be shorter than the other (and therefore half shaft) so that the pinion sits in the centre. i said it doesn't

and dead centre of the whole axle is the where the top bolt hole for the cover goes isn't it?

The diff body and pinion eat into the driver's seat area like a bugger on the locost! Thats with the axle located correctly with equal clearance on both sides of the chassis to the backplates.

Tell your uncle to keep off the 4X

he tried expalining to me over and over again, then we found another axle in the garage which hadn't been cut up, and the pinion still wasn't in the centre either

Just nipped in the garage. The top bolt is dead centre and the the orignal tubes are equal lengths.

Tell him to pick fault with something else on the build.

he wasn't overly impressed with my plan to reuse the diff and bearings either. i want an lsd, but can't afford it, but mostly i want the car SVA'd before IVA comes in (i think it'll be harder coz its new) so just want it all together before then, use it for the summer, then strip it all back down and build all back up again. said the diff was wrecked (it was never going to be perfect :L) bearings perhaps do need replacing though.

never mind. i was right, thats what matters
