Welding a Alloy Wheel Monza 2
Good friend of mine ran over a bolt in his Golf GTI and said bolt punctured his new wet weather tires and bashed the alloy. There is a wound on the
alloy where the tire should be and a outer dint is visible on the inside of the wheel with a tiny hole. The local tyre wholesaler has said they
can't fix it and they can't get hold of another. From the VW main stealer it's £700 quid per alloy!!
Does anyone know if they can be repaired? If so where?

My local wheel specialist, does these type or repairs, and are very reasonable
the other option is ebay, as the wheels, will be on a scrapped car somewhere
And have you actually checked with VW ? as i doubt very much they are £700 each !!

My friend says he has - he does exaggerate quite a lot though.
Ebay is a option

They can do it, my mate does them at his custom bike business for £50 a rim but it's in South Wales so that's not much help I know, but it
can be done.

Try a google search on "aly wheel repairs" - I had some similar sounding damage reapaired/straightened at £30 for a wheel in Grimsby. That
was without any laquering or painting though - just straighten /weld/smooth as required.
I can easily believe the dealer would want 700 for a wheel - 7 or 8 years ago I damaged a subaru one - standard one for the car and they wanted
£425+vat back then then - they know you buy from them or no-one as most people dont want to go to the scrappies/ebay, or else claim on insurance/from
the council if its from a pot hole. (I bought a set of non dealer ones from halfords complete with tyres for £500)

Hugh

I had an ali wheel with a bend in it, after I straighten this out with a block of wood and bottle jack the metal cracked a little. I drilled a hole
either end of the crack, ground a V and tig welded from both sides.
It worked fine for me

there is a guy near me who would do it
(nn10)
possibly too far for you though
I'd love to give my imaginary friend a great big hug,
but this jacket makes it impossible.

Do you have a photo or name of the wheel? Doubt it's £700. And should be able to find a used replacement from a VAG breaker/specialist fairly
easily - doubt it'll be more than £150-200 (again depends on the wheels style)
Audi 18" alloys for a TT are approx £400-450 RRP each at a dealer.

I use a guy called Ian Jemison. Pop on my web site and look under services for his contact details. He deals with alloy and magnesium. It may be worth
emailing him a picture of the damage..

I've over 28 years in dealing with magnesium wheels. Refurbishment and can powder coat most metal parts. Visit my web site if you wish..
