Squeaking M1144 pads
I've FINALLY got around to changing the front pads to Mintex 1144 - they're still bedding in, but it's already clear that braking
has improved. However, they seem to be squeaking a bit when I brake.
The pads came with a sticky-backed thin rubber sheet, which I guessed was meant to be stuck on the backing plate as some form of anti-squeak device -
which I did.
The old pads had the usual metal shim, and I'd put a bit of copper grease on each side of that - no squeaks. Anyone know whether it's a
good idea to tear the rubber sheet off the new pads and put the old shims in their place?

They all do this mate - I gave up trying to stop my 1144s squeaking... Jusy revel in the improved brake performance instead!

They do tend to squeel on some discs and not others. It's a bit like some people can make a wine glass sing and others never can. All to do with
the resonant frequency of the disc/pad combo'.
Put them through some good heat cycles might help. If nothing else doing that should be fun!
If that doesn't work, cut off half the backing/rubber stuff, leaving it just at the trailing end (if the calipers are behind the hub, leave it
on the top half of the pad...).
If niether of those help try the old shims and as a last resort grind a chamfer on the leading edge of the pad.
As a very last resort and only to prevent insanity, grinding 2 slight shallow cuts into opposite edge of the disc with an angle grinder can alter the
resonant frequency of the disc enough to prevent it.

Recently heard of similar experiences with 1144. Owner did as you initially suggested, removed rubber backing stuff, inserted std anti-squeal shims
with a smear of copper grease, and problem solved. Not sure if it is a permanent solution, but looks hopeful. After all, anti-squeal shims have been
used for a very long time and normally do the job.

Sounds hopeful!
The new pads came with a mighty chamfer on them - more than I would have put on...
What really brought it home was when I took the old pads out... I hardly had to push the pistons back because the pads were hardly worn, and
that's after almost 8 years and 10,000 miles of motoring. They hadn't been used anywhere near as much as they should. I'd guess
that this is due to:
* My car is far lighter than the Cortina, so the pads weren't worked as hard in normal driving.
* Many of the Cortinas had servos, which would work the pads harder.
* My old pads were general-purpose motor factor jobs (maybe Unipart) so probably weren't good quality.
The old pads used to work fairly well - as long as I stood on the brakes a few times to get them warmed up first. They were useless when stone
cold.
What's really noticeable now is the feel of the car when I brake heavily - I can squeak the tyres without too much effort (I have some
re-training to do!).

My M1144s squeal massively too. Much improved braking from cold though!

Mine squeal too. Stopped for a while with copper grease and also got better with rubber pads but still do it. Doesn't bother me too much -
i.e. can't be bothered to faff with other shims etc.

I tried everything to stop M1144s squealing in my Wilwood calipers. Gave up in the end and shifted to Ferodo DS2500. Squeal free and great fade-free
braking.

I had them and got sick of adding backing and trying copper grease... moved over to EBC yellow stuff and they are nice and quiet now.

How do they compare to the M1144's in your opinion in terms of performance and cost?
I am likely to need some new pads soon...
Thanks.
