Clutch pedal size and strength

Posted this thread a few days ago about making a new clutch pedal based on the roadster plans:

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=171857

I couldn't find any plate the size I wanted (5mm) but a mate has given me a piece 6.8mm thick.

I mentioned this to a friend who's an engineer at Mclaren. He laughed at me saying what did I need something that big for? Couldn't I use a bit of box section if I need something cheap? (I do need it cheap! )

When I think about it, he would seem to be right- there's no maths to this but am I really likely to bend a bit of, say, 16gauge 25mm box section (the stuff the chassis is made of?).

And it would certainly seem to be a neater solution than a solid chunk of girder!

How was the clutch so much lighter in the actual Sierra?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
James

In fact, looking at the OBP cable clutch pedal

http://www.obpltd.com/obp-shop/race-car-pedal-boxes/kit-car-special/cable-clutch

it's much smaller (and most importantly, lighter!)

Right, box section it is then!

Cheers,
James

Hi James, your question re-Sierra clutch pedal, they are made from very thin steel that is pressed into a "U" shape, so very strog in relation. I have the complete Sierra pedals, shortened, in my car. Cheers Ray

The "corrugated" type shape of the Sierra pedal gives it it's strength as mentioned above, but I'm sure you already knew that.

But in my opinion, I would not rely on the OBP pedal box thinking that this is over-engineered, if I were you...

The clutch pedal doesn't have much force to contend with, but at the same time, it would be a pain in the bum if using 1mm thicker material than you initially thought stopped you being stranded. (I'm obviously exagerating)...
