Tyre size selection - help me make up my mind

I am getting new wheels and track day tyres for my Cobra as the current wheels (15" ) give a very limited selection of decent tyres in my sizes (275 to 295 rear and 235 to 245 front)

I have decided to go with Hallibrand style 18" X 3 piece wheels on the rear and 17" on the front. For the rear I have to decide between 265 X 35 X 18 and 295 X 30 X 18 and can't make my mind up.

The quandary is that with the 265 I can get narrower wheels that will be lighter overall but might give less grip on the track and when accelerating than the 295s or will one not notice any real difference between the two in terms of grip.

I will be fitting either Bridgestone RE 11 S or Dunlop Direzza 03G tyres for track day use.

Please help me make up my mind - 265 or 295 at the rear on 9.5" or 10.5" rims respectively or should I go 10 wide for versatility sake and 265 to start with and when they wear out - which won't take long then try 295s

Another thing to make up my mind over is whether to go for pin driven Knock-Ons or ordinary bolt-ons.

Decisions decisions!

Hi Ivan

Some quick thoughts:

The 265x35's might be cheaper? (a plus)
The 295x30's might be less compliant (a minus)
The lower a profile the less suitable it looks on a cobra (debatable)

The 10" rims seem to be more "standard" and would give you more tyre options (a plus)

Pin drives add cost (a minus)
Pin drives lock you into using only your own wheels (a minus)

Cheers

You can do it quickly. You can do it cheap. You can do it right. – Pick any two.
