Noise, long shot but...
Hi,
This is a bit of a long shot but hoping someone can give me some ideas.
I took my Sylva J15 to Malvern yesterday and noticed a new noise. It's best described as 'chattering' a bit like a wonky shopping
trolley would make but loud enough to be heard above road and engine noise at 70 mph.
On the way there it started to be noticable 50mph+ but on the way back was louder and started at lower speeds. If I'm driving at steady throttle
it comes and goes.
There's no noticable vibration through the chassis or steering wheel. It seems like it's related to something rotating at road speed rather
than engine speed. The car drives perfectly in every other way.
There's no discernable play in the CVs although one is very near the exhaust and apears to have ejected a lot of its grease. It does seem to stop
when braking but the brakes appear OK (VAG standard floating items). I cant detect any play in the wheel bearings.
Only recent work was central tub off to fit a new temperature gauge but it doesn't sound like a vibrating panel.
I'm a bit stumped really.
Hoping someone may have some ideas!

This is a guess but loose wheels , prop shaft uj.
Flywheel clutch
Drive shafts uj
Just something else I got a new car years ago and it had a right racket it sounded like the engine was coming out
And all it was was a loose exhaust bole coming loose and the washer vibrating

sure one of the brake disk shields are not loose and rubbing the disk in the wind? they can make a noise like that
assuming you fitted them...

Check the inside walls of the tyres for damage.

From your description it sounds like a loose bolt or bracket but really could be anything. I'd start with exhaust mountings but who knows. As
it's only since you had the tub off double check around that but it could be a red herring.

I had a noise like that once in the old Allegro, turned out that the retread was coming apart and the noise was the cords in the tyre flailing around
and hitting the inner arch
Hopefully not that...

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I was 100% convinced it was something rotating but due to all the comments about other random things i checked the whole car over as rotating bits all
seemed OK.
Turns out it was a loose front metalastic suspension bush. When Jeremy Philips supplied these kits he supplied 1/2" metalastic bushes with 12mm
bolts so they are very suceptable to the bolts not being really tight.
Had issues with this in the post below. Thought I'd checked them all!

I'm amazed this could cause the noises I heard but all good now and handling very much improved!
