type 9 input shaft lengths

ive read on here that most type 9 boxes have a short input shaft, and that the v6 2wd ones have a long input shaft.

however, recently i broke my t9 off my 2.3 diesel, the replacement i got off a 1.8 cvh had an input shaft that was shorter. this one ended a few mm short of the face of the bell housing, the diesel box had an input shaft about 10mm longer.

any one know how long the v6 t9 box input shaft is? is it the same as the diesel box?

also, the haynes manual refers to the 5 speed type 9s as N type. is this just another name?

yours confusedly, Joel.

My Xr4i V6 Type 9 has the longer input shaft.

I got a spacer from Caterham to mate it to my pinto. The spacer is about 30mm thick so I think the shaft is approaching 30mm longer, but if I recall it may only actually have been about 25mm. I guess the spline length is also relevant.

I believe that Mr Haynes chooses to call the type 9 a type N for some reason.

Cheers

Mark

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes.

By that time, who cares.

You're a mile away, and you've got his shoes

The other item of concern when mixing and match input shafts is the number/diameter of the teeth on the other end of the shaft. Many years ago I played around with swapping input shafts on the original single rail boxes (mk 2/3 cortina, kent engines) and succeeded in blowing a gearbox up because I made an assumption that the iput gear was all the same. Wrong.

Enjoy.
