Painting/coating diff casing?

What do people generally do to coat the diff casing?

Its ally so it'll oxidise if left bare, its also not in the best location for keeping clean/dry!

I was thinking of just cleaning it up and then giving it a coat of lacquer, but a nice gloss black would also look great.

What paint do people generally use, smoothrite, hammerite or normal rattle cans? Prepped with some kind of etch primer I presume?

Any info welcome.

Hi Chris,

I just 'gunk'ed my diff and gave it a real job scrub then slapped on a coulpe of coats of hammerite satin black. Have a squizz here ( http://www.mnrvortxr1.co.uk/preppgthree.htm ) if you want anymore detail on what I did... Not saying it's the best way but looks real nice now.

Chris

Take a look at James's pink Diff. In his archive I think.

Pink is slightly ott!

Chris, were all your parts painted with satin black? They all have a nice glossy finish.

Whilst I'm here, anybody know the Torx (?) size for the diff end cover bolts?

If it's ally you'll need a coat of etch primer then fast build undercoat and then the gloss ( but not pink ffs)

i gave mine 2 hours coated in 'mr muscle' oven cleaner, agitated with a stiff brush, and then a blast with a pressure washer

painted it silver as i had half a can lying about. I wasnt bothered about the colour, just wanted the bare aluminium covered.

I wanted to check the condition of the insides so I would have taken it off anyway, but seems the guy I got it off had been there before as all the bolts were only finger tight.

Possibly he was in there to drain the oil, as the drain plug looks slightly permanent.

I presume its just a smear of instant gasket to reseal it?
