in relation to this thread

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=33081&page=2

I have found a gearbox from a mk3 carlton for £100 plus vat. What i want to know is whether a mk3 carlton is post 87?

and whether £100 plus vat is a fair price. its cleaned and tested from a breakers. I am going to have a look in the local scrappies this morning so i will let you know

Yes, that one will fit. I have never seen a mk1 carlton either but they apparently did exist. The last one "pre omega" is the one you want, ran from 1987 up until the omega took over.

Make sure it is a 1.8 or 2.0 though, the bigger engines are different bellhousing pattern to the XE!

PS I'd negotiate on price a bit, £100 is rather steep, £75 more reasonable.

Thought the 2.0L gearbox was no good??? starter on the wrong side.

Or was that just the manta 2.0 L ????

Yes you're right, the Manta 2.0l 'box is the wrong one. I have one of these somewhere, free to good home!

heh heh the wonders of Vauxhall/Opel!!!!!!

The CARLTON (post 1987) 2.0 uses the J-series engine, i.e. codes 20ne and 20seh, whereas the Manta still used the engine fitted to the previous carlton model, the 20E "CIH" engine right up until it was finished production in 1988.

The Manta 1800 which came out in 1982, however, rather bizarrely used the 1800 J-series engine, which shares an identical block with the 2.0 J-series engines and indeed the XE 16v too! Hence the convenience of the 1800 manta gearbox.

The post 1987 carlton gearbox is less handy as it uses a bolt on propshaft fitting unlike the manta one but it is basically the same gearbox.

Both the manta 1800 and 2.0 boxes are actually the same gearbox, but with a different front half casing. They are both Getrag 240 gearboxes which were also used on the smaller engines E30 bmw's, but again with different front casings!

Incidentally, the omega manual gearboxes (fairly rare) will also all fit the XE 16v engine, as the omegas all used the same bellhousing pattern, because the gm V6 (as opposed to straight 6, which was a development of the old CIH engine!) used the same pattern as the 4 cyls!!

phew, hope that helps the confusion!

I'll take that off your hands if you like, could always do with a spare, as the internals fit straight into the 1800 casing when (not if!!) it blows up. (I seem to get through these gearboxes in mantas like petrol!)
