shortened sierra drive shafts - how much?

I need to shorten two sierra drive shafts. Now i know the 'proper' solution is to go to GB engineering and get them to make me two. I spoke to them yesterday at autosport.

What i'm after is finding out how much Stuart Taylor charges for his cut & shut drive shafts (its sunday before someone suggests calling him).

Any ideas?

(I know these aren't ideal, but i've never heard of one letting go yet)

KCW £60 (not sure on VAT)
Raw Striker folk £55+VAT
STM £60+VAT

The postage is the killer at by Royal Mail its about £15 each way which doesn't even go into the industry.

Not much to choose between them. Hope this helps.

I am told that ClassicConversions do the work for STM but its only internet information. Don't bother looking for ClassicConversions website as what there is isn't very useful.


What do GB engineering want for a new pair?

Are all those cut and welded shafts?

If so then deffo go to GB!!

He wants £80 each for brand new, MUCH lighter, much stronger billet ones!!

GB wants 90 + vat + del for new shafts (each) i'm assuming the cut and shut's are 60 for the pair.

Also when i spoke to GB engineering i said i've got the drum braked rear end, from the conversations on i've read on here it seems there are two sizes of shaft, drum and disk, the implication is that GB don't do the size i need. I'll call them tomorrow to confirm.

So, unless the shafts are the same (at which point i've got options) i'm either going to have to go to disk rear end (which won't then fit my wheels) or get someone to modify mine

I looked into this (ended up cut&shut"ing my own). Apparently the best solution is friction welding - but I was quoted £120 for the pair by a company in team valley, gateshead - hence the DIY. They claimed to do loads for motorsport & "none had ever broken" etc. etc.
I'm just hoping that the 1/2 weight car equals 1/2 stress on driveshafts :^)

on a 7 welding them will be fine, but the old "if you are going to do a job, do it right" adage came in for me, and in the grand scheme of things £160 for a pair of brand new unbreakable and lightweight shafts is not going to be a major budget buster.

Mike - have you ordered the de-dion to attach all this lot to yet????
