Rear diff makeing a noise as if the diff lock is on
this is in an audi 90 quattro 1988 when making turns coming out of junctions and in car parks, does anyone know what the cause might be?
its like the same sound that happends when the diff lock is on but its not as loud

sounds like the car needs replaced, he he
only kidding...
Why wouldn't the diff lock make a noise? the wheels are going at different speeds coming out a junction.

oops i didnt make that very clear, if you have the lock on and make a turn on a hard surface the wheels scrub and this makes a sorta jabbering sound,
the car is making this same noise when the diff lock is off on hard surfaces oh yes and its not as loud as when the lock is on

it always has as well ever since we got the car two years ago, just maybe its about time to fix it because the rear drivers side quarter shaft (half
shaft, but should be called a quarter shaft since theres 4 of them and its transfers 1/4 of the power under normal conditions) has a small bend on its
self, well was small 15 months ago hasn't been looked at since

Is this a series 2 or series 3. The series two used a vacuum operated diff lock that can stick on or off with time. The vacuum actuator is right under
the car and pick up road dirt all the time. The vacuum line has to be good too. Witht the series 3 cars the diff lock is via solenoid I believe so
it's be hard to latch on. Do you have a copy of the Family Album beginning with an 'E' you can clearly see the parts on this. Signed

series 2 cause its pipes going in and out of the diff theres a control unit for the diff lock under the rear seat with pipes going to it aswell cause
there the same colour codes, the diff lock reasonly give up so i think it might have something to do with that, but its not completely locked is the
thing because she will still spin a single rear wheel on grass, can it intermittently get stuck in the on position?
