cutting driveshafts

has anyone cut there own driveshafts and rewelded them. ive got the bolt in type. and ive made my own de dion axle and ive had to shorten it down a bit hows the best way to measure it up to get the right lenght

its for my track car a saxo and the offset of the wheels iam gonna use
