more questions about atlas axles! removing diff
I know you all love my questions about axles! seeing as they're getting rare, i really don't want to mess this up...
going to retube the axle, cutting the exisiting tubes 10cm before the diff casing and sleeving it and welding it.
but, i'm temped to leave the diff in because of refitting and set up.
but i don't want to get it full of swarf from cutting the tubes, and damage it with the heat of welding.
hmmm, what to do...
what are they like to set up properly after wards? is all the backlash (i think its called?) set up by the pinion gear?
what do you think?

hi, firstly the proper way to shorten them is to remove the large weld pool on the rear and remove the whole tube and replace it with a new one but i
apreciate sleveing it is easier.
as regards removal and replaceing the diff as long as you dont disturb your baearings on the diff unit you should get away with it but if they move at
all it neeeds resetting they are basicly set in two planes the pinion to crown wheel if you like how far the pinion sticks into the caseing and also
the diff unit can be set left to right govened by how far the bearings are pushed on to the diff
personaly i would keep the diff in situ ram some rags down the end with a broom type tool cut remove rags and give it a ggo wash out and place a
magnet in the bottom as this will collect any little bits left in the fluid you can never quite get out
faling that no doubt the more knowladgeable people will be along soon with more suggestions for you

thanks again mate!
as part of a group 4 conversion, i'm using thicker and larger o/s diameter tubes, they won't fit into the diff casing like the standard
tubes, hence the sleeving. its tried and tested on the racing trucks, so quite happy with that.
the bearings should probably be replaced, so the diff will be coming out today! the side gears will need some attention too, probably replaced, so its
going to happen at some point, may as well be now.
pinion gear will stay though, i'll cut it with rags stuffed in the diff case, and then pressure wash (?) all the bits of metal out
and put it in front of a heater to dry it out so it doesn't start to get rusty inside
