Banded steels?
I seem to have donated my 7x13 Revolutions to my mates Mk2 Escort rally car so now I need some 7x13 rims for my car!!
I had intended to buy some Wellers but they seem to have gone up in price since I last priced them (in 1982) and my piggy bank is rather skinny at the
mo......
So.......
I've been directed to a guy called James SP on Retro Rides and he can band steel rims for £40 each. Which means I can send him some of my poxy
5.5" Ford rims and get them upped to 7".
I'm sure I read somewhere on this here Tinterweb, that banded steel were illegal but there is a letter and reply from VOSA over on Retro Rides
that claims that there is no reason why Banded steels don't comply with the Construction and Use regs (providing they are not dangerous!).
So chaps and chappeses, any thoughts? Or does anyone have any cheap 7x13" rims at 108mm PCD to fit my RWD Ford hubs??

From what I have seen over the last two years of looking for wide x 13" alloys on fleabay, anything over 6" rims and cheap, does not
appear in the same listing.

They were four spokes. He's only borrowed them but he'll be drilling out the holes to suit his Group 4 car!

It's probly all pub heresay etc, but I thought that there was a requirement for the wheels to have a cert to prove they were done by a coded
welder.
Though can't find any info on who requires the requirement!
Could end up being the insurer I guess if they are unhappy about the number of pedestrians chopped up by exploding wheel fragments ...

I'm sure I read somewhere that the rim had to be made of one piece. Obviously not in the case of alloys!
By the way Spag, have a look at Ebay user Peteyrs. He has some halfshafts that my be of use to you. Even the measurements may be of use?

A friend of mine looked into banded wheels about 20 - 25 years ago and they had been made illegal by then.
I'd check the law before handing over your pound notes.
Edited to add... I'm searching the web for some sort of proof, but all other forums seem to think the illegality issues are a myth from the late
70's, early 80's. One forum member (not LB) asked his MOT chap about them, and was advised they be a fail point.

I don't know why banded steel wheels have to be such an issue.
If you look at the area of welding compared to say a wishbone, and consider that the part is undergoing a constant 100 percent NDT in service if used
with tubeless tyres.

I agree, so long as the wheel is true and welded properly.
According to one of Mark Evans TV shows, a 1" weld (no, I've no idea how thick the steel was he was welding) should lift a ton. He did a
1/2" weld and lifted 1/2 ton. Given a wheel will have 3 feet of weld........
