master cylinder orientation

do brake master cylinders work in any orientation? I have a mini pedal box that works with vertical master cylinders. The standard mini M/C filler neck is too small for a level switch. Can I use a girling type master cylinder but vertically rather than horizontally? This will let me use a remote reservoir.

yes, within reason. Mounting it so the inlets at the bottom would obviously be a bit daft but vertical is fine and should help stop dirt scratching the bore.

The mini master cylinder has the inlet at the bottom outlet at the top. It has the pushrod hanging out of the bottom and pushes upwards when you press the brake pedal. I'd like to do the same.

Can't see a problem with that - the whole process doesn't require gravity after all so should work in any orientation.

no problem with bleeding it either as the flow is so high it will drag out any air. Push rod is not a problem as you just lower the cylinder onto it.

Yes the Girling patter cylinder will work this way round

You could use the MC from a later Mini or Metro the servo might be a good idea.

Inlet at bottom outlet at top -- otherwise it won't bleed.
