How to make a steering boss

I want to somehow fix one half of my quick release steering boss to the column. As you can see the hole in the middle is bigger than the column so i need to fill it in and shape it to fit the hex on the end of the column. I have an adapter but it's too chunky and wouldn't look right. Anyone got an idea how i can do this?

Do you have an old sierra steering wheel?

Cut the centre boss out of that. I can't remember what it's made of though, if it's steel then just trim and weld in place.

Cut out a disk of mild steel of a good thickness and file out the hex shape? Bolt into the centre of the boss?

I do have an old wheel but i was going to use it for the iva than swap to a nicer wheel straight after. The quick release bit is made of ali i think the sierra one is too. I also wanted to cut the wide ring part off too just to make it neater.

personally i would say its better to buy or machine the correct part for the job and not die. after all a steering wheel is a bit of an important part in the chain when it comes to not crashing

I'd agree last thing you want is to be tanking along and the wheel comes away in your hand. Especially after spending all that time and money building the car then getting wiped out for the sake of £50 or so.
Cheers,
Bob

Totally agree with the comments above about safety.
In a previous life I marketed replacement steering wheels and bosses.
The most critical factor is the boss as failure means brown trousers on the one hand, death on the other.
Cast bosses are really not up to the job - the thought of modifying one just makes my flesh creep!
Also there have been reports on here of proprietory quick release wheels detaching in use (for whatever reasons) so personally I wouldn't risk either bought or home-made.

I'd gladly pay £50 for the correct part but I can't find any decent adapters that aren't far too chunky. I won't be using stalks or the column shroud.
