Steering Rack Tipping
In an effort to reduce the angles on the steering UJs I have tipped the pinion of the rack forward using angled 5mm plate wedges.
These have slots to allow fore/aft adjustment of the rack.Only tacked in at the moment as the bodyshell is on so access is poort for welding.
Nat had the rack mounted horizontally onto plate with welded nuts on, however tipping it not only puts the column into much better shape, but also
gives me slightly more legroom. Since Ive done this, the steering is now spot on, turns over lovely. The centre column bearing flexs on the thin
bulkhead slightly. But its a vast improvement on how it was.
1) Is the use of suitable bolts & nuts ok with the rack, compared to the welded on nuts Nat did ? Would you advise an extra gusset on the angled
plates to pick up the horizontal chassis plate - I am belt & braces pissed sorry......
2) Does tipping the rack have any issues in respect of the geometry ?
3)Have a look at the column support bearing, to address the flexing in the bulkhead I was going to cut to length a piece of 16mm square tube and
weld a 3mm plate to it with captive nut , then weld the tube at either end to the insides of the inner wheelarches. The square plate is obvious in the
2nd picture.

Mines tipped, I would just add a couple of additional braces so they do not twist off.
I just have Nyloc nuts.
