52" atlas axles
how easy are they to find these days?
I'm after one from a 3L capri specifically...

They can still be had. A 3ltr one was what I had But I swapped it for a 2 litre one (better ratio) as the 3 ltr is a 3.09 ratio. A 2.8 injection with
an lsd is what you really want though and they are pretty scarce.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

not sure i'm too bothered about the LSD to be honest, got one on the BMW, and its a nightmare when its been raining. I won't take the car
on the motorway when its wet... mind you, i'm sure the tyres have something to do with that too...
I could probably get away with a 2 litre atlas, bearing in mind how much lighter the truck will be compared to a capri, but o'd rather not risk
breaking it

need to make sure the atlas is actually what i'm after. might be being a bit too specific you see. pick up truck website says heavy duty ford
truck axle. one of the drivers told be they're capri axle, but i'll need to check. just testing the water just now

AFAIK the axles across the capri range are the same, strength wise, it's only the ratios that are different. There is a truck axle that is
similar it's fitted to the landrover IIRC
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

^ so would i be right in thinking that the diff carriers are all the same too? so if i broke one, it should be easy enough to replace? and all half
shafts being the same too? reason i ask is because i would need to convert to 6 stud hubs and discs on the back. i should be able to get some ex
racing hubs, so really don't want to get something wrong, and lose money

I dont think they are made by the same folk so prolly not interchangeable. Perhaps someone else may know better.

^ i see what you mean, but surely that makes getting any parts a bit of a lottery?!
I'll have to call Sonny tomorrow and see what he suggests... i think they all use quaife casings for racing though

Have you considered a Volvo 740 axle?

i think weve had this conversation before .
the diff that its in a volvo rwd is a dana30 - ie the front diff from a cherokee/CJ jeep.
the rear of a jeep is dana 44 , and an explorer is an 8.8 ford , so basically that atlas depending on power/torque / weight of vehicle might not be
upto it .

^ yeah, we kind of have, but i'm going away from the Dana 30 now. thats what i've already got, but really its too wide at 56"
the racing pickups use (i think) that atlas axle for racing, and i know theres alloy hubs they can use for racing anymore with the 6 stud pattern to
match the bedford uprights up front, and the set of wheels i've got already.
so yeah, kind of similar, but different

The P100 pickup used a heavy duty Atlas axle IIRC.
